Dryobates maculifrons
Petit pic à bec court, avec un dos vert olive, une nuque jaune et une face grise. Fortement barré dessous et sur la queue. Les mâles ont une calotte rouge, verte chez les femelles. Se trouve dans les forêts humides, les lisières de forêt et les forêts secondaires.
Identification
The yellow-eared woodpecker is about 15 cm (5.9 in) long. Males and females have the same plumage except on their heads. Males have a brown crown with white streaks and some red tips and a mostly red hindcrown. The female has an olive crown with pale spots, and golden tips on feathers in the rear. Adults of both sexes have a mostly olive-brown face with whitish streaks and a pale golden-yellow nape. Their upperparts are mostly yellowish green, sometimes with a bronzy tinge, and yellowish spots and bars especially on the rump. Their flight feathers are darkish brown with pale yellow to white bars. Their tail is dark brown with paler bars on most feathers. Their underparts are off-white with narrow olive bars that are wider on the breast and flanks. The iris is dark brown to reddish, the long beak blackish with a paler base, and the legs are olive or gray. Juveniles are duller than adults and have heavier barring on their upperparts and coarser barring on their underparts.
Taxonomie
The International Ornithological Committee and BirdLife International's Handbook of the Birds of the World place the yellow-eared woodpecker in genus Veniliornis. However, starting in 2018, the American Ornithological Society and the Clements taxonomy moved all species of genus Veniliornis into genus Dryobates.<p>The yellow-eared woodpecker is monotypic.

Répartition et habitat
The yellow-eared woodpecker is found in eastern Brazil between the states of Bahia and Rio de Janeiro. It inhabits lowlands and hills of the Atlantic Forest, both primary and secondary, and is also found in parks.

Comportement
The yellow-eared woodpecker is believed to be a year-round resident throughout its range. <p>The yellow-eared woodpecker has been documented feeding on insect larvae and pecking on an avocado (Persea americana), but nothing else is known about its diet or foraging strategy.<p>The yellow-eared woodpecker's breeding season appears to include at least March to July. One nest hole was about 18 m (60 ft) up in a tree. Nothing else is known about the species' breeding biology.<p>The yellow-eared woodpecker's vocalization is a "high, nasal, rising then slightly falling, chattering rattle" that lasts about five to seven seconds.

Une Grive frappante, peu connue, avec un corps largement noir de jais, à l'exception du dos, du croupion et de la nuque rouge carmin, et une grande tache blanche sur les joues. Elle fourrage au sol, seule ou en couples, à l'intérieur des forêts de plaine. Inconfondable dans son aire de répartition restreinte sur les îles Peleng et Taliabu. Elle émet un chant typiquement complexe, caractéristique des grives, avec des notes flûtées et des sifflements combinés à des phrases rauques, répétés régulièrement. Sa note d'appel est faible et à peine audible : un "seeep" très fin et aigu.

Busard de taille moyenne, vole les ailes en V, bas au-dessus des champs ouverts et des marais, à l'écoute des rongeurs qui se cachent en dessous. Comportement de chasse distinctif et tache blanche conspicue sur le croupion dans tous les plumages. Cinq longues extrémités des primaires en « doigts » proéminentes en vol. Les femelles et les immatures sont brun chaud avec des poitrines striées. Le mâle adulte a les ailes gris moyen uni avec les extrémités noires et un ventre plus pâle.

Rapace de taille moyenne avec une queue arrondie, contrairement aux autres milans. Les adultes sont reconnaissables avec une tête et une poitrine blanches contrastant avec un plumage autrement brun brique. Les juvéniles sont d'un noir-brun plus foncé avec une tête plus pâle et de grandes taches blanches proéminentes sous les ailes. Généralement associé aux zones humides intérieures et côtières en Asie tropicale, mais il est largement restreint aux zones humides côtières en Australie où il est alternativement connu sous le nom d'« Aigle de mer à dos roux ». Le cri est un « Kyeeerrh » nasal et prolongé distinctif.
