Tres Marias Hummingbird

Endangered Atlantic Ocean seabird that nests on Bermuda and disperses widely when not breeding. Handsomely patterned with dark gray and white; note especially the gray on crown, nape, and face that extends unbroken down the sides of the neck in a cowl. The latter feature is usually lacking in the otherwise similar Black-capped Petrel; Bermuda Petrel also typically has a narrower white collar and less white on the rump. When not nesting, it can only be seen far from land, where it often flies in swooping arcs with little flapping. Locally known as “Cahow”, it very nearly went extinct in the mid-twentieth century, but was returned from the brink largely due to the heroic efforts of local conservationists.

Small rainforest bird with yellow throat patch. Primarily olive brown with yellow edges to the primaries. Has a dark face with a pale streak above the eye. Inhabits rainforest habitats on the east coast of Australia. It is usually seen actively hopping around and foraging on the rainforest floor, as it feeds exclusively on the ground. May mimic the calls of other species.

A small songbird with a conspicuous white eye-ring, a green face and upperparts, a bright yellow throat, a white belly, and a yellow base to the undertail. Pairs and small groups occur in the lowlands in forest, edge, sparsely wooded areas, and gardens. Restricted to Ambon, except for a few records from Seram. Separated from Warbling and Lemon-bellied White-eyes by its white belly, and from Seram White-eye by its green face and forecrown. Song comprises a rapid, pleasant warble. Also gives penetrating “tzew” notes.
