Black-throated Robin

Plesiodryas albonotata

A medium-sized bird of montane forest midstory. Medium gray upperparts, black face and bib with indistinct, white, horizontal crescent moon below the cheek. Belly is also gray in central areas, and white on Bird’s Head and southeastern New Guinea. Juvenile is a distinctive rufous color and immatures, blotchy. Sits still in the midstory, slowly wagging its tail. Co-occurs with the similar-colored Blue-gray Robin, but is larger with a black throat. Black-bellied Cicadabird is also a similar color-scheme but much larger. Voice, a high-pitch whistle. Either a single note or identical notes given in a slurred series.

Identification

Measuring 18 to 19 cm (7.1 to 7.5 in), the black-throated robin has a grey-black face, throat and upper breast with a grey crown and nape, and a white diagonal mark on the neck. The upperparts are blue-grey, and the underparts grey to white over the abdomen and under the tail coverts. The bill and legs are black, and the eyes are dark brown. The plumage is reminiscent of a cuckoo-shrike, but the white neck marking is diagnostic.<p>The black-throated robin is found predominantly in rainforests along the central highlands of New Guinea, from the Bird's Head Peninsula in the west to the Huon Peninsula in the east, at altitudes from 1,800 to 2,750 m (5,900 to 9,000 ft). Within the rainforest, it is found singly in the understory or on the ground. It is insectivorous, and hunts by gleaning.

Taxonomy

The black-throated robin was described by the Italian zoologist, Tommaso Salvadori, in 1875, from a specimen collected in the Arfak Mountains on the island of New Guinea. He coined the binomial name Megalestes albonotatus. It was moved to the genus Poecilodryas by the English zoologist, Richard Bowdler Sharpe, in 1879. A 2011 molecular phylogenetic study found that the black-throated robin was the most divergent member of Poecilodryas. The species is now the only species placed in the resurrected genus Plesiodryas that had been introduced by the Australian ornithologist, Gregory Mathews, in 1820.

A rare, medium-sized lorikeet of foothill and lower montane forest. Green body with yellow-green striations on the face and underparts, and a gray band from the eye around the back of the head. Bicolored bill is blue-gray above and orange-yellow below. In flight, lacks the yellow bar in the wing or any red. Travels in pairs or small groups, but gathers in larger groups at flowering trees. Similar to Goldie’s Lorikeet but Striated has light streaks and lacks the pink face. Sounds like other closely-related species.

A unique species with a patchy distribution from Costa Rica to Brazil. True to its name, the bill is sharply pointed. Both sexes are olive-green above and whitish or pale yellowish below with bold dark spotting. The orange crown patch is difficult to see. Not well known, but seems to occur mostly in mature forest in foothills from around 700–1,700 m. Often follows mixed-species flocks. Can forage acrobatically or perch upright for longer periods. Most easily detected by its strange song, a long descending whistle.

Distinctive large shorebird with long legs, enormous yellow eye, heavily streaked underparts. During the day stands or sits under small trees/shrubs, often in small groups. When disturbed will lie down and flatten neck to the ground. At night becomes active and wanders around calling its wonderful eerie wailing cry. In cities like Darwin, Cairns, Brisbane it is relatively common in parks, open grounds, camping grounds. More common across northern Australia.
