Raffles's Malkoha
Rhinortha chlorophaea
Long-tailed cuckoo that clambers about in the branches like a squirrel. Male predominantly bright rufous-brown with darker tail, female has gray head and chest. Both sexes have bright blue skin around the eye and blue bill. Forages in middle levels of vegetation in lowland and foothill forests, singly or in pairs. Gives sharp meowing calls (often repeated), as well as croaks and chirping notes.

Baker's Imperial-Pigeon
Ducula bakeri
A large, strikingly dark pigeon with an entirely dark upperside, a purple throat, a gray head, and a chestnut belly and underwing. Found mainly on large islands above 600 meters of elevation, but occasionally coastal. Unlike any other pigeon in Vanuatu. Most common call is a series of about 15 accelerating and shortening hoots.
White-backed Night Heron
Calherodius leuconotus
Dark, chunky, handsome heron. There are white spectacles around the eyes and a white patch on the back; the latter is hard to see except in flight. Scarce and retiring species that is rarely seen without expressly searching for it. Found along rivers and streams. Strictly nocturnal; roosts during the day in thick waterside vegetation. Call is a rough “krak,” higher-pitched than the call of Black-crowned Night-Heron. Immature similar to immature Black-crowned Night-Heron but shows a white ring around the eye and a black cap.
White-capped Redstart
Phoenicurus leucocephalus
Chunky, brightly-colored redstart found along rushing boulder-strewn mountain streams. Black with a wine-red belly and tail and a blazing white cap; in poor lighting, appears all dark save for the cap. Sexes similar. Frequently flicks tail up and down and flares it open while perched on a streamside rock or stump. Call is a long, sharp whistle with an abrupt ending, with a far-carrying, ventriloquial quality.
