Sclater's Myzomela
Myzomela sclateri
A small honeyeater of forest on small islands off New Guinea and New Britain. Dark brown upperparts with pale yellow underparts, streaky chest and whitish underwings. Male has a black head and a bright red throat whereas the female only has a faint red chinspot. Male is unmistakable. Female similar to female Black or Olive-backed Sunbirds, but has a slightly streaky throat and chest. Also similar to female Red Myzomela, but female Sclater’s lacks the red tail and forehead. Call, a simple high-pitch “chip”.

Yellow Longbill
Macrosphenus flavicans
An unusual warbler with a long bill and yellow eyes. Brownish above and dull yellow below with a gray head and whitish throat. Found in rainforest, mainly in dense tangles at middle levels, usually in pairs or small groups. Similar in appearance to other longbills, but with a good view, separated by the coloration of the underparts. Most often detected by the distinctive song: a long series of clear whistled notes in which each note is slightly lower in pitch. The pattern is similar to that of Sabine’s Puffback, and the individual notes sound very batis-like.
White-winged Tanager
Piranga leucoptera
Fairly small tanager of humid evergreen and pine-oak forest in foothills and highlands. Found mainly in the canopy, usually in pairs or small groups that sometimes join mixed-species feeding flocks. Distinctive male is brilliant red with black mask and black wings with neat white wingbars. Female has same plumage pattern as male but is greenish and yellow overall. Calls are high lisping whistles.
Siberian Grouse
Falcipennis falcipennis
Chunky medium-sized gamebird of far eastern Russia. Both sexes are dark brown with white-spotted underparts. Male is heftier and thicker-necked, with a black throat bordered by white. Also note bright red patch of skin above each eye. Female is patchy brown with a more peaked head. Inhabits well-shaded coniferous and mixed forests, where it forages on the ground and in trees. Male gives odd clicks and claps during display.
