White-breasted Babbler

A small, dark songster of montane rainforest floor and undergrowth on Sumatra. Male is overall dark slaty-gray but slightly paler on the belly. Female is similar but duller and even paler on the belly. Both sexes have thin, white eyebrows and long, black legs. Forages on the ground but also hops on logs and low branches. Can be confiding but moves rapidly when alarmed. Superficially similar to Sumatran Blue Robin but shortwing’s tail is shorter and it lacks the white forehead. Song is a cheerful, random series of up-and-down whistles. Call, a sharp “click!”

A medium-sized flycatcher, reminiscent of a mix between a becard and a Myiarchus flycatcher. Uncommon to rare in lowlands and foothills from eastern Panama to northwest Ecuador. Gray above and white below with a dark cap and black wings with bold white edging. More slender-bodied and longer-tailed than a becard. Occurs in open areas, second-growth, and forest edge, often perching conspicuously in the middle to upper levels.

A medium-sized parrot of montane forest on Mindanao. The two central tail feathers have extended shafts ending in a racket shape. Green overall, darker on the back and paler below, with deeper green on the head and a blue face. Occurs together with Mindanao Lorikeet, but is larger and lacks the red face and bill. Voice includes various nasal squeals and a harsh, metallic “ra-geek!” often in flight.
