Sierra Madre Crow
Corvus sierramadrensis
Uncommon small black crow. Plumage has an iridescent dark blue sheen when seen up close. Compared to much more common Philippine Large-billed Crow, note present species’ larger-headed appearance, small bare patch behind eye, and somewhat stouter-looking bill. Formerly treated as part of a more generic “Slender-billed Crow” that ranged from the Philippines to Sulawesi; Sierra Madre Crow is restricted to montane forests in northern and central Luzon. Often encountered singly, in pairs, or as small flocks in flight over swathes of contiguous forest. Calls are quite different from those of Philippine Large-billed Crow, being rather high-pitched short caws: “weh, weh, weh!”

Chestnut-sided Warbler
Setophaga pensylvanica
Breeding birds show yellow cap, black triangle under eye, streaked back and reddish-brown sides. Looks remarkably different in fall with distinctive lime green above and gray below with bold white eyering. Breeds mainly in secondary forests, especially areas with large shrubs and young trees. Does well in disturbed habitats, particularly power line cuts and areas that have been logged. Forages for insects. Winters in Central America.
Red-headed Bullfinch
Pyrrhula erythrocephala
Stunning masked finch of montane and foothill forests. Males have a bright orange head and breast; females have a light yellowish wash to the back of the head and neck. Both sexes have soft gray backs and black wing panels. Forages in small to medium-sized flocks in low vegetation on or near the ground; sluggish, often clambering about in shrubbery. Listen for soft tooting vocalizations.
Baker's Imperial-Pigeon
Ducula bakeri
A large, strikingly dark pigeon with an entirely dark upperside, a purple throat, a gray head, and a chestnut belly and underwing. Found mainly on large islands above 600 meters of elevation, but occasionally coastal. Unlike any other pigeon in Vanuatu. Most common call is a series of about 15 accelerating and shortening hoots.
