El Oro Parakeet

Boldly-patterned sparrow found in montane forests from Bolivia to northwestern Argentina. Usually in pairs on or near the ground, foraging at the edge of forest. Note the bicolored bill with an orange-yellow lower mandible. Also look for the bold black-and-white head pattern, black chest band, and bright mossy-green back. The song is a series of high-pitched notes.

A small, short-tailed parrot of lowland forest and edge, mainly at low elevations. Green body with dark blue in the wing, and a dark forecrown and cheek. Males have a white line separating the cheek, crown and bill, and usually an orange chest. Female has a darker face, less orange on the breast, and an orange patch behind the dark cheek. Usually found in small groups. Most similar to Double-eyed Fig-Parrot, but Dusky-cheeked has blackish instead of red forecrown and cheek, and an orange breast. Calls a sharp, high-pitched “tsik!” or excited twittering which often betrays their presence in a tree.

Medium-sized hummingbird, male mostly green above with purple throat, thin white line behind eye, and bright white belly. Female not quite as colorful but still unique with white belly and line behind eye; she has a spotted throat. A forest hummingbird that also comes out to edges and gardens.
