Bianchi's Warbler

A large brightly colored barbet of forests and forest edges. Distinctive with its bright yellow bill, dark head, back, and tail, and yellow belly. There is regional variation within the species, especially prominent on the throat, which can be dark with small pale speckles or heavily streaked with whitish. Found in rainforest and lower montane forest, usually in the understory, and especially in treefall gaps, and along forest edges. Voice consists of a low “oop” or “op-oop” given in slow succession, sometimes for several minutes.

Chunky, generally uncommon, rather grouselike bird of the high Andes. Found in pairs or small groups on bogs, stony slopes, and in bleak moorland of puna and páramo zones. Lacey “chainmail” pattern to upperparts is beautifully cryptic, and birds sometimes freeze when alarmed making them more difficult to see. No similar species in range; note the short stout bill and rusty underparts. Flight strong and fast, and flushes with loud shrieking choruses.

Chunky black-and-white bushshrike. There is a white slash across the wing, and the underparts are pure white. Uses habitats that include marsh, gallery forest and woodland, thick scrub, and mangroves. Found in pairs, which usually skulk, but sometimes hop about in the open. Song is a perfectly synchronized duet in which the male gives a hollow rising whistle and the female a low ratchet. Similar to Tropical Boubou, but easily separated by lack of rufous tones to the underparts and different vocalizations.
