Black-banded Barbet

Stunning, ornately-colored toucan of high Andean cloud forest. While the general plumage pattern is similar to other mountain-toucans, the multicolored coral, black, and yellow-striped bill separates it from all others. Eye is yellow in most of Peru, dark elsewhere in its range. Typically encountered in pairs or small groups that forage in the forest canopy. Often noisy, giving long, rising screams or short, excited yaps.

Strikingly marked miniature barbet. Adults have a red patch above the bill, but immatures lack this. Found in woodland and savanna, ranging from arid to moderately moist. Most common call is a monotonously repeated “took” call that is sometimes given hundreds of times consecutively. Also gives a higher 2- or 3-part call and a fast trill. Adults easily separated from Yellow-fronted Tinkerbird by the bright red front. Immatures are tricky; immature Northern Red-fronted is slightly smaller and darker-backed.

Tiny, round, short-tailed bird with a long curved bill. Breeding males are blue on the back and yellow below, with bright bare skin around the eye. Non-breeding males and females are dull olive-green. Madagascar endemic that is found in the canopy of eastern and northern rainforest. Hyperactive nectar feeder that constantly flits from flower to flower. Call is an accelerating series of quiet and very high-pitched notes. Similar to the scarce Yellow-bellied Sunbird-Asity, but has duller olive underparts and a larger, more curved bill. Smaller than Souimanga Sunbird, with a thinner bill and shorter tail.
