Gray-throated Martin

Small. Olive-green above with a yellow belly and vent. Chest mottled buffy-olive. Bill long and fleshy. Note the thin black eye-ring and smudge in front of the eye. Common in primary forest, less common in other scrub and forest. Song reported to be melodious. Calls include a high-pitched “sit” and “peep.”

This seedeater has a widespread but disjunct range throughout much of Central and South America. Males are mostly slaty gray with a paler belly and whitish patches on side of the neck and base of primaries. Note stout yellow bill with curved upper mandible. Females are brownish, similar to other seedeaters, but note stout dark bill and whitish belly. Generally rare and irregular. Usually occurs in small flocks at forest edge, occasionally venturing into more open habitats. Sometimes associated with seeding bamboo.

A large woodpecker of wooded habitats on Palawan and neighboring islands. Whitish below with dark scaling and golden-olive above with a diffuse reddish mark on the back and a finely spotted, pale cream-colored throat. Angular crest is black with a red tip in females and entirely red in males, which also have a small red moustache patch. Similar to Red-headed Flameback, but Spot-throated has black-and-white stripes on the head and a dark rather than pale yellow bill. Voice includes a loud, stuttering, staccato “ki-ki-ki-ki-ki-ki-ki-ki!” trailing off at the end.
