Wallace's Owlet-nightjar

Small, active songbird with long, pale-tipped tail, speckled breast, and pale belly, endemic to the Santa Cruz Islands. Note orangish rump and tail base. Birds on Vanikoro and Utupua are significantly darker than birds elsewhere in range, with dark throats. Frequently cocks and fans tail. Inhabits wooded areas from the coast up into the highlands. Formerly grouped with other closely related species under “Rufous Fantail.”

A very small nondescript sunbird with a short orange-based bill that curves uniformly along its length; easily mistaken for females of other sunbirds. The only features on the olive upperparts are indistinct paler eyebrows and lines running under the eyes, and yellow edging to the wings. Although often hidden, the male has yellow or whitish (not red) tufts at the shoulders. Singles are local and inconspicuous at the edges of lowland and riverine forest, sometimes entering secondary growth; it joins mixed-flocks and is frequently attracted to epiphytes in mossy clumps. Calls a high-pitched “tseeep” and trills. Little Green and Fraser’s sunbirds are similar to Bates’s but brighter, with straighter bills and more distinct yellowish eye-rings; Ursula’s Sunbird has a long decurved bill and grayish face and underparts.

Uncommon and elusive green broadbill. Both sexes distinguished from other Bornean green broadbills by blue wash on belly; it is bright ultramarine in males and paler blue in females. Also note black “polka dots” on wings. Only found on Borneo, where it is restricted to hill and submontane mixed dipterocarp forest. Forages quietly for fruit in understory, often in pairs. Song is a dove-like ascending coo with a hiccupy beginning note.
